Lines
I waited in line for over an hour to buy some pastries. In recent years, the bakery line has become an increasingly common sight in Chicago. Sometimes stretching blocks long, these lines have mostly mystified me, as there are perfectly…

Fifty
I turned 50 years old at the very end of 2025. I don’t really have any perspective on that, though I keep thinking I should. I certainly don’t feel like a 50 year old man and I am sometimes surprised…

Lottie + Doof Gift Guide 2025
Leo Costelloe Bow Pin Starting off with a splurge (in this economy!) which was a gift to myself for the milestone birthday I am barreling towards at the end of the month. I have admired Leo Costelloe’s work from afar…

London
Bryan and I were supposed to be in England for 3 weeks back in April. A few days before we left Bryan broke his foot, forcing us to postpone the trip. It was a bummer. We eventually managed to get…

Wellness Check
The bloggiest thing I could possibly do is to apologize for being away for so long. Gift guide aside, the last time I wrote to you it was about mediocre films and cookbooks, a year ago. Which I find myself…

Galvanized Tin Vase by Fabien Cappello One of my favorite shops, Gardenheir, sells these wonderful vases by Fabien Cappello. I love Cappello’s work and his commitment to galvanized tin. Recently he posted a photo of some salt and pepper shakers…

Cookbooks and Criticism
I don’t recall why, but I decided to watch all of the films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar this year. I think I did this once before, years ago, and am learning the same lesson as I…

A Muffin Cult
It is important for you to know about this bran muffin recipe that was making the rounds a few weeks ago on Instagram. I learned about it from Hailey who learned about it from Camilla. But the origin of the…

Steamed Cranberry Pudding
Coming to you today with one of my most treasured and strange holiday recipes. Versions of this oddity appear all over the internet on sketchy food sites that are mostly ads for weightloss drugs and recipes for “salads” off of…

L + D Gift Guide 2023: Special Guest Edition
Continuing a tradition started last year, I again managed to convince five of my favorite people to share their gift picks with all of us. I could not be more excited to bring you this very special edition of the…

RIGHT HAND PILLOW by John Sohn This was my birthday gift to myself (a tradition I highly recommend). After admiring John Sohn’s work for years, I finally treated myself. It is a big chunky hand to hold you close, or…

The Big 8
The quickest of check-ins to share this giant pop-tart (galette if you’re fancy!) that I recently made for an 8-year-old’s birthday party. I used recipes in Camilla Wynne’s brilliant book, Jam Bakes. But essentially I rolled out two disks of…

Eating in London
We recently returned from three weeks in England. We spent a week in Somerset and the Cotswolds, but the bulk of the time was spent in London. It was a dream trip with origins in a week-long trip we had…

Let them eat cake
This photo from the set of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is one of my favorite things. And one doesn’t think about Marie Antoinette without thinking about cake, or at least I don’t. Though I also know that the famous quote…

Oatmeal Crisps
Quick note to share what is, I believe, one of the greatest cookie recipes ever created. Bryan’s nanny made these for us whenever we visited (that is a picture of us all watching her favorite soap opera, years ago.). The…

L + D Gift Guide 2022: Special Guest Edition
This year, in an unprecedented move on my part, I decided to ask other people to contribute to a second, bonus gift guide. This was mostly very selfish. Because my gift guide is always stuff I already have, it doesn’t…

Lottie + Doof Gift Guide 2022
Adult Bib My main advice this year is to shop Gohar World. Because no place online has a better selection of frivolously wonderful things. Like these adult bibs, which are as unnecessary as they are beautiful—my definition of the perfect…

Cranberry Gingerbread Crumble Bars I recently made these Cranberry Gingerbread Crumble Bars that are extremely delicious. Recipe is by Asha Loupy, who is a genius recipe writer. They are a riff on another bar she makes with strawberries and pistachios,…

Into It, July 22
We were in Michigan last week and on a very hot and humid day went to an orchard to pick fruit. We came home with more sour cherries and blueberries than we probably needed and the seasonal fruit timer ticking…

Into It #1
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I think is cool and why. Or maybe, more accurately, I have been thinking more about what is not cool. I regularly get sent catalogs from Flamingo Estate, a company in Los…
