The Rock Makes a Parade
Every morning, I look for two things on my drive down 6th. The first is a girl curled on her apartment building’s alley stoop, smoking a morning cigarette and swiping on her phone. She never looks up. The second is Levitated Mass (2012) by Michael Heizer. Over the past year, the…

REFLECTIONS ON CHINATOWN
#1998 I came to LA in 1998. Fresh off the bus from Canada. Well, plane. But just as starry-eyedas anyone. I was a part of the Royal ArtLodge in Winnipeg so community meant everything to me. Now I’m just in LA and just trying to figure it out. A year later, my best friend Paul […]

DATALAND How an AI Museum Disappointed Me
Milosh Soberman is 14 years old and does not like art. He recently visited Dataland, “the world’s first Museum of AI Arts. With this being an AI museum, I thought I wouldn’t need to show up in order to write a review. “Dataland” isn’t what you initially picture when your friend…

THE HORROR OF TIME A Short Story
In 2012, Daniel Zalewski profiled Christian Marclay and The Clock(2010) in The New Yorker. The piece includes a single, throwaway reference to an assistant: “One fellow, who offered little but gunshots and ‘guys getting their heads chopped off,’ was fired.” Over the next month,…

LA’S SUMMER THAT WAS A Parade Through the Valley of Ashes
In 1969, just months before Neil Armstrong allegedly walked on the moon, Queen Elizabeth rang in London’s brand-new,ten-mile-long Victoria tube line with a ceremonial ride in thetrain’s front car. Her celebration was warranted: the line was the first of its kind to be built in…

#Art in the Age of the Avatar
Casually, colloquially—sifting through photo albums, sorting through obsolete tech in our parents’ homes, watching TikToks ironically warning of TikTok-induced brainrot—we refer to “Y2K” as the start of a new digital frontier. Yet a phenomenon far greater than any symbolic…

IN SEARCH OF A CITY September/October 2026
A few weeks ago, Pilar Zeta and I visited the new David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, where on a clear day, one can almost see Venice, California, with his back turned to Francis Bacon’s Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969).

COLLECTING THOUGHTS Tim Zeleny
What started with just collecting Mars Volta concert posters and work from underground graffiti artists that I met at hip hop shows, led me down a rabbit hole of collecting art from all over the world.

JULIA WEIST at New Theater Hollywood
As a kid, spaghetti westerns made me sweat. Not the violence, the dubbing—that quality where a mouth moves at one rhythm and the voice lands just slightly off it, as if the sound had come loose from the body and traveled through some other room to reach me. I hadn’t thought…

THE HATS OF HEDDA HOPPER Counterpoint Records and Books
Hollywood has always needed a narrator, because the creation of real-life mythology relies on being understood and, more importantly, being believed. The unscripted stories of backstage life were exclusive precisely because there appeared to be no obvious writer or director…

ALONE, ALONE, ALL, ALL ALONE at Ehrlich Steinberg
Everyone seemed to agree that “Alone, alone, all, all alone was topical. The word hovered around the opening at Ehrlich Steinberg with the peculiar force of consensus: loneliness, online life, avatars, algorithms, the thinning distinction between connection and its simulation.…

RODRIGO RAMIREZ at Murmurs
When is a human no longer a human? When is the body no longer a body? These questions have been turned over by all manner of modern philosophers, from abortion activists to judges handling necrophilia cases to science fiction filmmakers. Now Mexican-American artist Rodrigo…

STAYING SANE(ish) WITH DR. TRAINWRECK Advice
This month is a tough one. Because this month, I, your trustworthy bona fide font of wisdom and advice, have got nothin’. Yes, I still have my degrees and my experience and years of making mistakes so you don’t have to. But I am also someone’s daughter. Or I was. Because my…
